Hanam Tree Orphanage

Hanam Tree Orphanage with the whisper of trees

Hanam Tree Orphanage was created on an area of 89,000㎡ to replant and cultivate trees removed due to urban development projects so that they can be reused as roadside trees, park trees, and landscaping trees. As of now, it does not accept tree donations or transfer trees to parks, etc. anymore. Instead, it focuses on growing trees to create an urban forest (park). About 46 types of trees, including pine trees, plantain trees, ginkgo trees, and zelkova trees, are flourishing in the facility. The Hanam City Government utilizes the Hanam Tree Orphanage as an educational site that promotes the importance of environmental preservation. It has now becomea new popular tourist destination in the metropolitan region along with Hangang River nearby.

Establishment

With ‘99 The Hanam International Environment Exposition’ held in September 1999, the Hanam City Government recognized the importance of the environment, and public opinion on making Hanam into an eco-friendly city began to form. In November 1999, Hanam established a plan to replace the plane trees in the city area, which generated many civil complaints due to their pollen triggeringallergic reactions. Selling the trees was not an option since it was difficult tofind buyers. The city decided to transplant the trees in April 2000 without harmings the trees that had grown in this area for a long time. This marked the beginning of Hanam Tree Orphanage. Since then, it has been formed by planting trees donated from the Gyeonggi-do region, including 159 pine trees that were supposed to be cut down due to a road construction project along the Hangang River, 300 ginkgo trees damaged due to a road expansion project, 1,000 zelkova trees, 1,700 metasequoia trees, and 450 red maple trees.

Weeping Willow of Tree Orphanage

There is a weeping willow at the entrance of the Tree Orphanage. This 40-year-old tree was dying due to sickness. Then, in April 2010, the rotten part of the tree's trunk, which was nearly half of it, was cut off and a major surgical operation was carried out to attach an artificial bark of a tree to the empty space. Today, this weeping willow firmly guards the entrance of the Tree Orphanage. If you visit the Tree Orphanage, make sure you pay a visit to this remarkable tree!
