Continuing Canaan's Educational Ideology and
the Spirit of the Times
Kim Yong-ki, also known by his pen name Ilga, was a rural enlightenment activist, who dedicated his entire life to serving the country and its people. In 1962, he established the Canaan Farmers School in Hanam, based on the core values of his educational philosophy, “Work, Service, and Sacrifice”. The Canaan Farmers School played a significant role in developing community leaders and promoting enlightenment and progress in farming villages. Kim's Canaan spirit later served as an inspiration for the Saemaul Undong.
Ilga Memorial Hall Containing the Spirit of Kim Yong-ki
Ilga Memorial Hall was established to continue Kim's teaching that furthered the development of the Republic of Korea and encouraged the growth of leaders of agrarian and social development.
The total area of the memorial hall is 141㎡, including an exhibition room on the first floor and Ilga Archive on the first basement floor, which display the artifacts and materials that belonged to Kim Yong-ki.

Meet Kim Yong-ki (Ilga)
Exhibition Zone 1 displays the Pioneer’s Bell, which Kim Yong-ki used to ring first thing in the morning every day at Canaan Farmers School, symbolizing the pioneering spirit of Kim Yong-ki and Canaan Farmers School.

The four-cut cartoon drawn based on the interviews with Kim’s disciples helps you easily grasp Kim Yong-ki’s lessons.
